Edmund Calamy (1600-1666) was a Reformed Presbyterian preacher of the Gospel and one of the distinguished members of the Westminster Assembly. He was active to promote Reformed Theology in his day and was an eminent scholar of the Bible.

This work by master theologian Edmund Calamy is a work of the highest order on covenant theology. Following the received standards of the 1647 Westminster Confession, this work on the idea of “covenant” is both theologically helpful and eminently practical. There is the Covenant of Works, where all men by nature lie under the pollution and guilt of Adam’s sin, and liable to all the curses and penalties due to them for breach of that covenant. This was the covenant God placed Adam in as representative of his all his progeny – the entire human race which he plunged into the curse for his disobedience.

And then, secondly, there is the Covenant of Grace which God the Father made with Jesus Christ from all eternity to save the seed of the woman. This is Christ mystically considered. He biblically, carefully and methodically explains that the Covenant of Grace was prepared in Christ in light of the fall of Adam. It took place, as Genesis chapter three verse fifteen shows, to take place at the very moment of Adam’s fall, housed within the threatening against the serpent and his seed. If God has not remedied the fall by Christ, the seed of the woman, the justice of God would have immediately seized on all of creation under heaven, and consumed them to nothing in wrath. But Christ came with the covenant in his hand saying, “Be gracious unto him, and deliver him from going down to the pit, I have found a ransom,” (Job 33:24). He shows that the Covenant of Grace was made with Jesus Christ and his seed mystically considered, and this was the contract or agreement of God the Father with God the Son from all eternity as Mediator for the salvation of the elect.
