This work is set on the premise that the great design of all God’s judgments on a professing people is to reform them. You must be very discerning about the times in which you live, so that you may set yourself steadfastly in the work of personal reform, church reform, and reforming the world to the glory of God.
God requires his covenanted people to be covenant keepers, not covenant breakers. That means we are obliged to keep covenant duties while in God’s covenant of grace. It’s not enough to simply say Jesus did it all for me, and then neglect his commands. Christians are bound to keep covenant with God and to use the covenant promises given to them in Scripture for the furthering of their sanctification.
After studying the Doctrine of God, there is no other doctrine more important to the Christian than the manner in which God saves him. This is planned in eternity past in the Covenant of Redemption, an essential truth of the Christian Faith, the Bible and of Covenant Theology. Willard masterfully devotes an entire book to this covenant and explains how the Father, through the Son, in the power of the Spirit, provides for the salvation of his church.
