History
of the Westminster Assembly of Divines
by Dr. William M. Hetherington
Description:
This current work by Hetherington is a helpful
addition to the few books that aid the Confessional
Presbyterian to study the Westminster Assembly. It is
not a new book, but one which has been unavailable for
some time. Much of Hetherington’s work focuses on
ecclesiology and the church’s relation to society in
general, especially his prolonged excursus on
Independent and Erastian debates within the Assembly. He
details the accounts of the four perspectives of church
government surrounding Episcopalians, Presbyterians,
Independents, and Erastians. But his work is not simply
a detailed account of debates, but an analysis on the
differences of the assembly in their varied
denominational sectors. He spends, therefore, a great
deal of time on what Westminsterian historians deem “The
Grand Debate” between the Independents and
Presbyterians; a title given to the main work debating
the biblical viability of Independency. This is a
must read for the serious inquirer of the
Westminster Assembly.
